Announcement of 2019 Canada Games Plan, NEW Junior Provincial Team, and UPDATED 11-12/13-15 Provincial Team Competition Info

1) Release of SSO’s 2019 Canada Games Team Plan (2 year development program, encompassing 2017 Provincial Teams)
 
2) Addition of a 2017 JUNIOR Provincial Team (Selection Criteria now online)
 
3) Announcement of 11-12, 13-15 & Junior Provincial Team Summer Competition

1) ANNOUNCING 2019 CANADA GAMES TEAM PLAN
 
SSO is excited to announce our improved, innovative, and comprehensive 2019 Canada Games Team Plan, which will encompass this summer’s Provincial Team programming. 
 
After review of the 2015 Canada Games Team program and results, and in alignment with the development of the 2017-2020 SSO High Performance Plan, it was determined that a new development program, training plan, and selection process was required. It was decided that Ontario should implement a 2-year training and team development plan that monitors a larger pool of athletes in Year 1 (2017-18) and selects the final team earlier in Year 2 (2018-19).
 
A more detailed explanation of the above information, including Canada Games Teams FAQs, can be found in the posted “2019 Canada Games Team Plan” document.
 
 
2) ANNOUNCING ADDITION OF JUNIOR PROVINCIAL TEAM FOR SUMMER 2017
 
To kick-off Year 1 of the 2019 Canada Games Team Plan, we are excited to announce, that in addition to the previously posted 11-12 &13-15 Provincial Teams, SSO will be adding a Junior (16-18) Provincial Team program for the summer of 2017. Only the Junior (16-18) & 13-15 Teams will fall under the 2019 Canada Games Team Training Pool, in alignment with the 2019 Canada Winter Games age eligibility.
 
The new Junior (16-18) Team Selection Criteria has now been posted online on the High Performance page. Junior Provincial Team Trials Phase I will take place at the Hilton Invitational.
 
Any 16-18/FINA Junior Athletes interested in attending the first Phase of Provincial Team Trials at Hilton should register on E-Reg by Wednesday March 15th. 
Please use the NEW E-Reg Meet called “Junior Provincial Team Trials Phase 1” & use the payment form sent via SSO Communications on February 23rd. Registrations should be directed to meetreg@synchroontario.com.
 
 
 
3) ANNOUNCEMENT OF COMPETITION FOR 2017 PROVINCIAL TEAMS
 
For the 2017 Summer Provincial Teams Programs, Ontario has decided that all three teams (11-12, 13-15 & Junior/16-18) will travel to Edmonton, Alberta to compete in the SYNC Invitational from July 26-29th. This information has been updated in the posted 11-12 & 13-15 Selection Criteria.

Stéphanie Leclair and Robert Prévost announced as Canada’s mixed duet pair for FINA World Championships

Pair will compete in Mixed Duet Free event on July 28-30 in Kazan, Russia

Ottawa, July 16, 2015 — Synchro Canada is proud to announce that 2012 Olympian Stéphanie Leclair, from Gatineau (QC), will join forces with synchronized swimmer Robert Prévost, from Montréal (QC), to represent Canada in the first-ever mixed duet event at the upcoming FINA World Aquatic Championships in Kazan, Russia, on July 28-30, 2015.

Both athletes have come out of retirement to train for the World Championships, where they will be entering the Free Duet event.

“We are very proud to be the first ever Canadian mixed duet,” stated Leclair.  “We can’t wait to go out to Russia and show the world what we’re capable of.”

“This is truly a dream come true for me,” added Prévost.  “I’ve been involved with synchronized swimming for so many years but I’ve never had the opportunity to represent my country in an international competition.  I’m very thankful for this opportunity and I’m glad I’ll be able to share it with Stéphanie who is a great duet partner.”

The pair is coached by Valérie Welsh, another 2012 Olympian, who will be accompanying them in Russia.

New event
The mixed duet is a new event on the synchronized swimming calendar and will be presented for the first time in a FINA sanctioned competition at the Kazan 2015 World Championships

About Stéphanie Leclair
Stéphanie Leclair won the first medal of her life at her second competition at the age of 5. At age 15, she moved to Montreal to continue her development in a new synchronized swimming club. Three years later, in 2008, she was selected for the Junior National Team and she won a bronze medal in duet at the FINA Junior World Championships. In 2009, she was selected for the Senior National Team.

In 2012 in London, Stéphanie was part of the Canadian Olympic team that finished 4th. She also represented Canada at the 2013, 2011 and 2009 FINA World Aquatic Championships where she won 2 bronze medal in the combo events, at the 2010 FINA World Cup where she won two bronze medals in the team and combo events, and was part of the Canadian Team champion of the 2009 FINA World Trophy.

About Robert Robert Prévost
Robert Prévost started synchronized swimming when he was 12 years old and immediately fell in love with the sport.  After many years as a competitive swimmer, he stepped into a coaching role and has been coaching synchronized swimming at CAEM Club in Montreal for 15 years.  He was an artistic director for various aquatic shows and performed with Cirque du Soleil at the opening ceremony of the 2005 FINA World Championships.

It has just been announced that Synchro at the Canada Winter Games will not be broadcasted on TSN but will be available for online live webcasting at:

http://sportscanada.tv/canadagames/index.php/week2/synchro

The broadcast schedule might however change. There will be daily updates/featured events on TSN each day from almost all sports, just not full events. Hopefully Synchro will receive some TV time!

Jennifer Koptie and Manny Wu set to lead Ontario’s 2015 Canada Games Team

Etobicoke, April 10th, 2014 – Synchro Swim Ontario is pleased to announce the coaching team for Ontario’s 2015 Canada Games Synchronized Swimming Team.  The Team will be led by Jennifer Koptie as Head Coach and Manny Wu as the Assistant Coach.

Jennifer Koptie is currently the Head Coach of the Variety Village Synchro Club. Jennifer was the Assistant Coach of the 2007 Canada Games Team and was Head Coach of the Junior Provincial Team in 2012 and 2013. She was Assistant Coach for Synchro Canada’s 2013 National 13-15 Team, and this past March led the Variety Village 13-15 Team to the top of the podium, winning gold at Synchro Canada’s National Qualifier.

Manny Wu is a former Olympian and currently coaches at the Granite Synchro Club. She led Granite Synchro’s 13-15 Team and Duet to gold at the 2012 National Championships and this past March led the Granite Junior Team to the top of the podium, winning gold at the Synchro Canada’s National Qualifier.

“Synchro Swim Ontario is thrilled to have the talents of Jennifer and Manny leading the 2015 Canada Games Team” said Mary Dwyer, Executive Director. “We are confident their skills and leadership will propel Team Ontario to victory and provide for exciting competition in the challenge to reach the top of the podium in Prince George”.  Kara Heald, Sport Development Manager, High Performance & CS4L added “I am very excited to work with Jennifer and Manny in building and working with Ontario’s Canada Games Team. I am confident that we have a very strong leadership team in place to support our athletes”.

Ontario athletes reach new heights at Canadian Qualifier Championships in Montreal

Etobicoke, March 16th, 2014 – Synchro Swim Ontario (SSO) congratulates all of our athletes and coaches for their successful results and many historic ‘Ontario Bests’ achieved at Synchro Canada’s 2014 Canadian Qualifier Championships.   This event, which took place in Montreal from March 11th through March 15th, is Synchro Canada’s largest national competition, attended by over 500 Athletes and Coaches from across Canada, competing in 13-15 FINA, Junior FINA and Senior FINA events.

“It was a great week for SSO and we are tremendously proud of the many podium successes and amazing performances by our Ontario athletes.   We congratulate all of our athletes and coaches for a job extremely well done!   We have shown that Ontario is a force to be reckoned with, setting the bar high for this season and for the years ahead, with our ongoing journey of excellence to deliver world-class athletes”, said Mary Dwyer, Executive Director of Synchro Swim Ontario.  Further added Kara Heald, Sport Development Manager, HP and CS4L, “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the hard work, perseverance, efforts and support of the past few years pay off with such historically successful results for our athletes and coaches of Ontario.  I could not be more proud and happy for all of them!”
